Former General Electric engineer and manager Arne Loft, 91, of Ridge Road, Scotia died Thursday, November 6, 2014. He was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, where he graduated from Copenhagen Institute of Technology with a BS in electrical engineering. He came to this country in 1946 right after WII and found employment with GE in Erie, PA. Mr. Loft joined GE's Creative Engineering Program and was fortunate to work in a number of GE plants in the northeast before settling on the Gas Turbine Department in Schenectady. He was very proud to have been the one to push the start button on the first electric utility Gas Turbine in the U.S. (Oklahoma, 1949). During his service to GE he held about 15 patents on items ranging from a light bulb to the SpeedTronic control system that became the standard for GE's steam and gas turbines. He also received two management awards and presented numerous technical papers around the world in many languages for ASME, IEEE, CIMAC and others. Arne worked for over 40 years with General Electric, most of them with the Gas Turbine Division, including over four years with the French Gas Turbine Manufacturer- Alsthom \endash Belfort, France. After retiring from GE he consulted on gas turbine projects in many parts of the US and Europe as Loft Consultants. He was a member of the Elfun Society and spent numerous hours over many years with his Computer Rehab friends revitalizing computers that are given to charitable organizations.

Arne enjoyed traveling around the world, skiing and summers at Galway Lake where he enjoyed sailing his catamaran. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Helen, their children - Andrea Loft of Galway, NY, Eric Loft of Copenhagen, Denmark and Linda Loft of Seattle, WA, four grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
