Mindeord om Peder Hansen (død 1871) fra Jens Vissing Stochholm
IN MEHORY OF MY BELOVED GRANDFATHER PEDER HANSEN
BORN 1778--DIED 1871 _
Å few days short of 93 years of age.
He served eight years as a cyrrasser in the Danish Cavalry, from 1802 to 1810. Denmark was at that time allied with France under Napoleon.
At the end of a fair day, with the sun in the west, So peaceful and sweet was his going to rest.
lt was not like death - just passing on -
To a fairer land With the Victory won
Eight years in the saddle with a gallant throng
He rode out of the castle with warrior's song
Years spent away from home and friends
But even to Wars there is sometimes an end.

Returning home now a man of peace,
It was still a battle, not a life of ease,
But he fought it well, was loved and esteemed
As he always stood for what right he deemed.

Now he loved us children and when the day's work was done
We counted it joy and the very best fun
To listen to his stories, that never grew old
About men of peace and of warriors bold.

With the stories of the Bible which he know so well,
Of it's heroes he could both sing and story tell.
Yet, best of all was the story sweet
Without which no life on earth is complete.

The old, old story of the FATHER'S love
Made known to us by the Christ from above,
He loved HIM and served HIM, and is now at rest
Though ever with us in memory blest.

I shall meet HIM I know, on the beautiful shore
Where loved ones meet to part no more.

JOHN W. STOCHHOLM.
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.

July 1926.
Loving memories, with imagination inspire us sometimes to write, as in this case about Grandfather. In my imagination I see this man in the saddle, I hear the clatter of the horses hoofs upon the robblestones as they ride through the court gate of the castle. I hear the Warrior's song come back to me as a cloud of dust hides the last rider at the end of the road. I see grandfather coming back, straight and strong, after eight years of service for king and nation, taking up the battle of life in a new way. He fought it well and won, his life was a life of faith in GOD. And, then I see myself as a child at his knee, eager to learn and to listen and long to be like him. I see myself a youth walking with him for the last time to the old Kirk where we worshipped together. I saw him the day he passed on to be with the Lord. It was like the peace and rest which comes to a man after a busy day well spent, When the sun goes down in the west. I saw dear grandmother weep, as a young bride who had lost her lover, though they had lived together almost sixty years. He told her not to weep as he said, "Our parting will only be short, till we meet again". Over half a century of my life has passed since that day and even at this time it seems but a short while ago to me. Soon the Word will be fulfilled, even for me, that the parting will be short and "We shall meet again". JOHN W. STOCHHOLM. CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
